According to legend, the only thing that saved Valdemar II, King of Denmark, from defeat by the Estonians at their stronghold Lyndanise (the Toompea castle of modern Tallinn) on 15 June 1219 was a red banner with a white cross, the Dannebrog, which fell from the sky as a revelation.
