With the suppression of the 1968 popular revolt in Czechoslovakia
the regime's ideological pressure strengthened once again, as the
Soviet central government strove to create a uniform Homo sovieticus.
The covert campaign involved forced industrial development and
residential building for new immigrants, the overt effort comprised
routine parades and voting in support of the regime.
Culture became a refuge:
people perfected their
protest by interpreting what
was squeezed between the
lines. Hidden allusions were
sought in theatre and art,
and meaningful lines of
poetry were quoted by the
entire nation. |
